# Feeling drained

> Feeling drained means your energy has been used up faster than it came back. It is less about sleep than about spending: people, worry, noise, decisions. You can feel drained after a calm day if it asked a lot of you, and rested after a busy one if it gave something back.

Drained is a word many people reach for at the end of a day, and one of the least precise. Dictionaries define it simply as very tired, but in use it can mean tired, numb, irritable, flat or done with people. Finding the closer word can help you see what actually took the energy, and what might bring some back.

In a sentence: "I'm drained" usually means: I have nothing left to give tonight, even if I did not do much with my body.

## What feeling drained can be like

- Small requests feel big: a text to answer, a dish to wash, a question from someone you love
- You want quiet more than rest, and you scroll instead of sleeping
- Your patience is shorter than usual, then you feel bad about it
- Things you usually enjoy feel like one more thing to do
- You can function, but it takes effort to look like you are fine

## Drained, or a word that fits better?

Drained often hides a more specific feeling. The difference matters, because each one points to something different.

| Close word | How it differs |
|---|---|
| Tired | Tired is mostly about the body and usually lifts with sleep. Drained overlaps with it, but people tend to use it when what ran out was more emotional or mental, which is why it can outlast a good night. |
| Exhausted | Exhausted is tired pushed to the limit, often after a long effort. Drained is closer to a slow leak over the day. |
| Overwhelmed | Overwhelmed is having too much at once, right now. Drained is often what is left after a stretch of being overwhelmed. |
| Burnt out | The World Health Organization describes burnout as coming from long-term work stress that has not been managed: exhaustion, growing distance or cynicism toward the job, and feeling less effective at it. Everyday speech also uses burnt out more loosely. Drained can be a single evening. |
| Numb | Numb is feeling little at all. Drained still feels, it just has nothing left to respond with. |
| Flat | Flat is a lack of color in the day, without the sense of having spent anything. Drained comes after spending. |

## What often sits behind it

- A day of small tensions rather than one big event: interruptions, waiting, switching between tasks
- Caring for someone, or holding a conversation together for others
- Hiding how you feel at work or with family
- A worry running in the background all day, even while you did other things
- Too little that gave energy back: no time outside, no one to talk to, no moment that was yours

## Questions to ask yourself tonight

1. What took the most energy today, and was it a person, a task or a worry?
2. When during the day did I first notice I was running low?
3. Is drained the right word, or is it closer to tired, overwhelmed or flat?
4. What gave me even a little energy back today?
5. What is one thing I can take off tomorrow, or do differently?

## When it is more than a rough evening

Feeling drained after a demanding day is ordinary. Talk to a primary care doctor or a licensed mental health professional if you feel drained most days for two weeks or more, if rest and sleep no longer help, if it makes work, relationships or looking after yourself hard, or if it comes with losing interest in most things, changes in sleep or appetite, or thoughts of not wanting to be here. Lasting tiredness can also have physical causes, such as anemia, thyroid problems, sleep problems like sleep apnea, some medications, or alcohol and other substances, and a doctor can check for these.

## Questions

### What is the difference between feeling drained and being tired?

Tiredness mostly comes from the body and goes away with sleep. Feeling drained comes from what the day asked of you, emotionally or mentally, and can still be there after a full night. Asking yourself what took the energy usually tells you which one it is.

### Why do I feel drained after being around people?

Being with people takes attention: listening, reading the room, keeping your own feelings in check. Some people recover that energy alone, others recover it with a few close people. Noticing which kind of company drains you and which kind refills you is a useful thing to track.

### How do I recover when I feel drained?

Start with what was spent. If it was people, protect some quiet time. If it was worry, write or say the worry down so it stops running in the background. If it was a long list, pick one thing to drop tomorrow. Small, specific changes tend to hold better than a general promise to rest more.
